Who I am . . .

My name is Barbara. I am a gastric bypass surgery patient sharing my experince with you.My name is Barbara and I am 34 years old. I am the younger daughter of Sylvia who is the owner and webmaster for this main site which is meetgypsy.com. You might say I am Gypsy's "other mom" since I live with my mother and we all share the delight in Gypsy being a part of our family.

How my gastric bypass surgery pages came about . . .

My mother, Sylvia, asked if I would like to have some pages on her site devoted to my gastric bypass surgery success and I said, "Sure!" She is as proud of my accomplishment as I am and wanted to share my experience with the world in much the same was she shared her own battle in 2005 with breast cancer. She has had so many people respond to her personal breast cancer pages with kindness, prayers and words of encouragement that she felt my own story about weight loss surgery success would be an inspiration to other people who may suffer from morbid obesity and the health related problems that stem from being over weight. Some of the health issues caused directly by obesity are life-threatening! The social stigma of being overweight can be very hard to cope with, too. So many people view obesity as a weakness rather than a disease, much the same way some people view alcoholism. Morbid obesity is a very complex disease and gastric bypass surgery is only for those people who fit a strict criteria and have tried every other means possible to loose weight and keep it off. Gastric Bypass Surgery is a very serious decision and has lots of things which can go wrong if the patient does not adhere to their doctor's instructions!

Work, Spare Time and My Guy . . .

Me and my guy Chuck.I work full time for a major banking institution. In my spare time I like to surf the Internet and spend time with my wonderful boyfriend "Chuck." I have been dating Chuck for almost two years, even before I decided to have my gastric bypass surgery. Chuck is very proud of my accomplishment, too.

I Love to Cook . . .

I enjoy cooking new recipes for my mother and stepfather and Chuck even though many of these foods I can no longer eat either because they are not good for me or are not recommended for bypass patients. This doesn't bother me to cook but not be able to eat these dishes because my desire for most of them has been alleviated by the surgery. I also do not get hungry even though I can eat only limited amounts of food each day.

My Family . . .

I have never been married and do not have any children. But I have an older sister who has three beautiful little boys who are my pride and joy! I enjoy them visiting us about twice a year. They live a great distance from us so we do not see them very often. We keep in touch nearly every day either by phone or emails though. I am very close to both my biological father and my stepfather. My biological father lives nearby and my mother has kept their relationship cordial and friendly all these years so that my sister and I could see and enjoy his presence any time we wanted. I am fortunate to have "two dads" who love me and a mother who is my closest friend.

UPDATE MARCH 30, 2008

On March 30, My beloved father Dan Duffy passed away after a long battle with chronic lung disease. He had been very sick and on oxygen for the past two years. My heart is broken over the loss of my father. We were very close and spent many happy hours together throughout my life. My Dad was one of the greatest human beings you could ever hope to meet. He was loved by everyone he met, generous and kind, fair and supportive to his employees of many years and someone I looked up to with the greatest respect. He remained friends with my mother throughout his life and my sister and I both enjoyed a loving circle of happiness with our father and extended family. I miss him so much and every day it is hard to go on without him. I was so lucky to be by his side holding him along with my sister and my mother as he took his last breaths of air. Goodbye Daddy. I love you so much and life will never be the same without you.

I Love My Pets . . .

Katie and Natalie!

I love animals. I have two darling female Chihuahuas now. One is a blond named Natalie and the other is Brown with white and black markings name Katie. We also have a 9 year old Chihuahua named Gypsy of course who is the main star of my mother's web site.

Katie is the baby. She is only 5 months old at this time. She was born on December 23, 2007. Natalie is a little over a year old. They are best buddies and play together all the time and usually sleep together when they get tired. Katie is shown here at about three months of age when her ears were not up all the way yet.

I Love Shopping for Bargains! . . .

I like to shop sales and I am now enjoying buying new clothes for the first time in my life thanks to the incredible results from having gastric bypass surgery. I enjoy buying things for my boyfriend and my mother, father and step dad when I find bargains. My own passion is jewelry. A girl can never have too much jewelry!

My Body Art . . .

I have been in love with the ancient art of tattoo for many years. I have numerous tattoos, some large and some small. My tattoos are very elaborate and reflect the things in my life I love the most or the beautiful creatures and flowers I love in nature. I do not go for "tribal tattoos" or body piercing except for my simple earring piercing. I don't like any tattoos for myself which are sinister-looking or in poor taste. My mother will be posting my body art photos on my pages soon for everyone to view. There will be no graphic photos or nudity shown in my body art! I even have a tattooed portrait of Gypsy, our Chihuahua on one ankle! Most of my body art has been created by the award-winning tattoo artist Eddie Yeary in Roanoke, VA. and I am very pleased with them and proud to show them to the world.

Favorite Pastimes . . .

I enjoy most all types of music, especially movie sound tracts and hits from the 70's and 80's. I enjoy watching comedies on TV and at the movies. I especially like to watch funny sitcoms with my mother. She has a very hearty laugh and it makes me smile to see her have so much fun watching something really hilarious. Our favorite show for many years have been Seinfeld and the syndicated reruns. My mother and I been to see Jerry Seinfeld in person twice and enjoyed him immensely! He is one of the greatest comedians of all time and a genius at writing comedy scripts.

GO CANES!

I love football, both college and pro. My favorite college team is The University of Miami Hurricanes and my favorite pro team is The Oakland Raiders.

But most of all I love my family, my close friends and  my sweet and funny boyfriend, Chuck. Just being with them and having their love and support no matter what I choose to do in my life means more than anything to me. It's true what they say..."Family is everything."
